Dry cupping therapy

Dry cupping therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses suction to stimulate blood flow, relieve muscle tension, and promote healing—without any incisions or bloodletting. It’s rooted in traditional Chinese medicine but widely used today in sports recovery, remedial therapy, and holistic wellness.

What Happens During Dry Cupping?

  • Cups (glass, silicone, or plastic) are placed on the skin.

  • A vacuum is created using heat or a manual pump.

  • The suction lifts the skin and underlying fascia, increasing circulation and stimulating the nervous system.

  • Cups may be:

    • Static (left in place for 5–15 minutes)

    • Sliding (glided across oiled skin)

    • Flash cupping (rapid application and removal)

Considerations

  • Circular marks (petechiae) are common but harmless and fade within days.

  • Avoid over-cupping or prolonged suction to prevent bruising or irritation.

  • Not recommended for clients with bleeding disorders, skin infections, or during pregnancy.

Advanced Techniques

  • Active movement cupping: Combines suction with joint movement to re-educate muscle memory and proprioception.

  • Flash cupping: Uses rapid cup placement and removal for lighter stimulation and minimal marking
